Mpox cases on rise in Hoima City

He urged residents to remain vigilant and adhere to standard operating procedures (SOPs) to help curb the spread of the disease.

Hoima: Health experts in Hoima City are raising concerns over the increasing number of mpox cases, as the virus continues to spread in the area.

Wilfred Ndozireho, the Surveillance Officer for Hoima City, revealed that as of Wednesday, 29 confirmed cases have been recorded since the first detection on November 2, 2024. Out of these, 23 patients have recovered, while six remain under treatment.

Among the active cases, three patients are currently admitted at Hoima Regional Referral Hospital, while the other three are receiving treatment from home.

According to health officials, the most affected individuals are sexually active adults aged 21 to 45 years, with 80% of infected persons reporting that they contracted mpox through sexual contact.

Ndozireho attributes the surge in cases to individuals—particularly women—who conceal their infection, leading to further transmission. Sex workers have also been identified as a high-risk group in the spread of the disease.

Ndozireho further disclosed that in the past three days, seven new suspected cases have been reported. The individuals are currently under monitoring at Hoima Regional Referral Hospital as they await test results from the Central Public Health Laboratory (CPHL) in Kampala.

Additionally, 12 contacts of the suspected cases—most of them family members—are also under surveillance.

Ndozireho identified Freedom Area, Kyesiiga, Mparo, and Buswekera as the most affected locations, describing them as the Mpox hotspots in Hoima City.

He urged residents to remain vigilant and adhere to standard operating procedures (SOPs) to help curb the spread of the disease.
