UPDF breaks silence on the ADF attack on tourists

Kampala: The Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF) has termed the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) attack on tourists in Queen Elizabeth National Park last evening a retaliation to their operations inside DR Congo with the hope of diverting the Army from the operation Shujja.

This was disclosed by Army Spokesperson Felix Kulayigye while addressing the media at their headquarters in Mbuya, Kampala, on Wednesday morning.

Kulayigye said instead, they will increase the pressure on them in all ways in their continued bid to protect the people from these heinous acts.

He added that a joint force of the UPDF, Uganda Police, and Uganda Wildlife Authority has deployed enough resources, both technical and physical, to pursue the terrorist.

Kulayigye also assured the tourism industry that this was an isolated incident, saying the country is safe and secure.

This afternoon, President Museveni condemned cowardice by the ADF rebels and promised to discipline them.

“It was a cowardly act on the part of the terrorists, attacking innocent civilians, and tragic for the couple who were newlyweds and visiting Uganda on their honeymoon. Of course, these terrorists will pay with their own wretched lives,” said Museveni.

He added that there were a few gaps in the handling of these remnants. UWA guarded tourists once they were in the park. However, apparently, the tourists were arriving and departing individually. It was this gap that they used.

Last evening, unidentified terrorists attacked and killed two foreign tourists and their guide, and they also burned their Safari car along the Katunguru-Mwera-Katwe road in Queen Elizabeth National Park.
