Buliisa: Three people have lost their lives in accidents over the course of seven days in the oil-rich Buliisa district.

Rampant accidents have been attributed to reckless driving and riding.

Julius Allan Hakiza, the Albertine Regional Police Spokesperson, told this publication that most cases of accidents they register are attributed to reckless driving and riding.

‘’For the case of Buliisa, only main roads are tarmacked; riders and drivers were used to murram roads; most of them ride or drive recklessly, and some roads have sharp corners like at the escarpment,’’ he said.

Hakiza disclosed that they have resorted to sensitizing the public, like riders and drivers, on the dangers of reckless driving or riding, stressing that some drive or ride recklessly without minding about other road users.

‘’We have traffic officers at certain points, but these riders or drivers tend to dodge them and use other alternative routes, and we can’t be everywhere, but it’s the responsibility of road users to ensure they take care of themselves.’’

Denis Oyewa, the LC3 Chairperson for Biiso Sub County, blames the rampant accidents in the district on riding or driving under the influence of alcohol.

He therefore advises road users to be careful while crossing the roads.

On the 18th of this month, a Sino-Truck registration number UBM 039F knocked dead Prisca Anirwoth, 30, along Buliisa-Wanseko road on a motorcycle while heading to Panyimur to follow up on her fish, which was reportedly impounded by fisheries protection unit officials.

On the night of January 24, 2024, Bigirwenkya Antwaani Musiimo, in his early 60s, was also knocked dead in Kibambura village, Ngwedo Sub County, along Buliisa- Ngwedo Road, as he was on his way home.

After the incident, angry residents torched the motor vehicle.

Again, on Thursday, January 25, 2024, another accident happened along Biiso-Hoima Road by an unknown vehicle, killing Moses Aliganyira on the spot.
