Kaliro: In a heart-wrenching incident in Kaliro Town Council, a family of three tragically lost their lives in a brutal house fire.
The victims, identified as 64-year-old Kaiga Muhammad, his wife, and their 26-year-old son, Swagga Amuza, were residents of Budini Nyanza Zone.
The authorities have arrested four individuals, including Wangule Abdu, the LC I chairman of Budini Nyanza Zone, along with three other locals Waiswa Simon (40), Kiige Willy (64), and Njagi Isma (20) to assist in the investigation of the murders, which are suspected to have been caused by arson.
The incident occurred on the morning of December 9, 2024, after a violent altercation. Swagga Amuza, who had been instructed by his father to tend to their mango garden, was attacked by a group of local residents amid a long-standing dispute over land ownership.
The situation escalated when Swagga sought refuge at his father’s home, only for the mob to follow and lock the family inside the house before setting it on fire.
Local residents who heard cries for help rushed to the scene but were unable to rescue the victims due to the locked door. Despite efforts from police officers to extinguish the flames upon their arrival, the victims had already perished in the fire.
ASP Kasadha Michael, Regional Police Spokesperson for Busoga North confirmed the incident and said they have begun further investigations into the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
Kasadha further stated that upon receiving the information, a team of police officers from Kaliro CPS, led by the DPC, responded to the scene and used available resources to extinguish the fire, but the trio had already perished.
The bodies were transferred to Bumanya Health Center IV mortuary for postmortem, and further inquiries are ongoing to establish more facts.
This tragic event has left the local community in shock, and the investigation continues to unfold as authorities work to bring those responsible to justice.
