Pope Francis appoints Bishop Odama’s successor
He is now the caretaker of the Gulu archdiocese until the Pope installs the new archbishop.
Gulu: Pope Francis has appointed the Bishop of the Nebbi Catholic Diocese, Raphael Wokoracah P’ Omony, the archbishop of Gulu archdiocese, replacing the most revered Dr. John Baptist Odama, who has served Gulu archdiocese since 1999.
The message was read to the congregation on Friday, who thronged St. Joseph in for God by archbishop emeritus, his grace John Baptist Odama, who said the message for the appointment of the new archbishop for the Gulu archdiocese was delivered to him this morning by the apostolic Nuncio Luigi Bianco, who is the Pope’s representative to Uganda.
Odama said this is now the response to the letter he wrote to Rome after he reached 77 years old, as stipulated in Article 104, paragraph 1, which directs the bishop to write for retirement.
He is now the caretaker of the Gulu archdiocese until the Pope installs the new archbishop.
Odama was appointed Bishop of Nebi in 1996 and served until 1999, when he was appointed Archbishop of Gulu Archdiocese on April 10, 1999, a position he held for 25 years.
In his personal message, Bishop Emeritus urged the people to pray for him as he prepared to celebrate the golden jubilees of his priestly ordination on December 14, 2024.
The Christians of Gulu remembered Odama for being a peacemaker and for his humility in championing education, health, and social-economic transformation in the Gulu archdiocese.
According to Canon Law, the new archbishop is supposed to be installed within three months.
