Karuma: Tragedy struck when a Makome Bus collided with a herd of elephants along the Kampala–Gulu highway, killing the driver and leaving 17 passengers seriously injured.
The accident occurred in the early hours of Sunday, August 25, 2025, at around 2:00 AM in Gwara III Cell, Karuma Town Council, according to Albertine North Regional Police Commander, Damalie Nachuha.
The bus, registration number UAR 339M, was traveling from Gulu to Kampala when it struck a group of elephants that were crossing the road.
“The deceased has been identified as Okema Patrick, the driver of the bus, who died before he could be rushed to Karuma Restoration Gate Hospital for first aid,” Nachuha confirmed.
The 17 injured passengers were transported to Kiryandongo General Hospital for treatment, while others were taken back to Gulu for further care.
A survivor, who declined to be named, described the terrifying moment.”I saw a big animal in front of the bus, and then the bus lost control. The elephants that were hit just kept crossing the road as if nothing had happened.”
Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident, and Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) is expected to assess the behavior and movement of wildlife in the area to prevent similar tragedies.
Karuma, located near Murchison Falls National Park, is known for frequent wildlife crossings, especially at night. Road users have often raised concerns over the lack of proper wildlife warning signs and fencing along critical stretches of the highway.
