NRM leadership under fire over alleged fake defections
The allegations have further fueled tensions between the two parties, with the NRM yet to respond to claims of fabricating defections for political gain.

Sironko: The National Resistance Movement (NRM) leadership in Sironko District is facing backlash over allegations of orchestrating fake defections, falsely branding their own members as new recruits from the opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC).
Over the past month, NRM leaders in Sironko have been parading individuals as former FDC members who have defected to the ruling party.
However, on Thursday morning, district party administrator Wilson Wambaka presented a man of little-known background, claiming he was the FDC chairman for Legenya Sub County in Budadiri East. The move quickly sparked controversy, spreading across Bugisu WhatsApp forums.
Patrick Waniaye, the FDC chairman for Sironko, dismissed the defection as fraudulent, stating that the person presented by Wambaka had never held any leadership role within FDC in Legenya.
“The actual FDC Sub County Chairman for Legenya is Alex Nandala Sojja, a committed party member in Budadiri East who has been actively working to end NRM’s 40-year rule,” Waniaye clarified.
He accused NRM administrators of orchestrating a disinformation campaign to undermine FDC’s strong support in Sironko. According to Waniaye, the NRM’s goal is to mislead higher authorities into believing that the ruling party is gaining ground in the district—potentially justifying additional funding for their mobilization efforts.
In a recent radio interview in Mbale, Nathan Nandala Mafabi, the Secretary General of FDC, urged party members to remain steadfast in their support for the opposition.
“We are planning a mass mobilization exercise, and I encourage our members to ignore these false reports meant to confuse and demoralize them,” Mafabi stated.
The allegations have further fueled tensions between the two parties, with the NRM yet to respond to claims of fabricating defections for political gain.
