Muslims urged to embrace government programs, prioritize education
He also called on believers to maintain the discipline and values observed during Ramadan in their daily lives.
Masindi: Muslims in Masindi District and the greater Bunyoro sub-region have been urged to embrace government wealth creation programs and prioritize education for their children as a pathway to improved livelihoods and a better future.
The call was made by Sheikh Abdenour Sozi Yahaya, Chairperson of Masindi Town Mosque, during Eid al-Fitr prayers held on Friday morning.
Yahaya emphasized the importance of participating in government initiatives such as the Parish Development Model (PDM), Emyooga, Youth Livelihood Programme (YLP), and the Uganda Women Entrepreneurship Programme (UWEP), noting that these programs are designed to uplift citizens from poverty and boost household incomes.
He encouraged Muslims to take advantage of these opportunities, stressing that they are entitled to benefit like any other Ugandan.
He further urged parents to invest in their children’s education, describing it as the most valuable inheritance they can offer.
Yahaya also advised Muslims to work hard and provide for their families, cautioning against selling land. Instead, he encouraged them to engage in productive ventures such as agriculture, particularly growing cash crops like coffee, to ensure sustainable income.
In addition, he asked Muslims to participate in and contest for positions in the forthcoming LC1 and LC2 elections this year.
“I want to congratulate you for participating in the elections we conducted in January and February this year. I encourage you to participate in and contest for positions in the forthcoming LC1 and LC2 elections because we need Muslim leaders,” he said.
He also called on the government to consider constructing Masindi Hospital and Masindi Central Market.
“We thank the NRM government for the infrastructural developments in Bunyoro, such as the football stadium, roads, and the airport, among others. However, we appeal to them to construct for us a hospital and a central market,” he added.
Rogers Byamukama, the Member of Parliament-elect for Masindi Municipality, also challenged Muslims to prioritize education regardless of their career paths, noting that it remains essential for future success.
“You should consider educating your children because even when you have businesses, you need basic skills like counting money. Remember, education is the best gift you can give your child,” he noted.
Byamukama said construction of staff quarters at Masindi Hospital has reached the roofing stage, adding that the government has already secured funds for the construction of the Outpatient Department (OPD), after which other departments will follow.
He further revealed that construction of Masindi Stadium is expected to commence in two weeks’ time, noting that the assessment of hotels to host officials during AFCON will begin next week.
“Government has already secured Shs105 billion to support hotel owners in improving their facilities to meet international standards,” he added.
Meanwhile, Ssemambo Muhammad, the Masindi District Deputy Supreme Khadhi, congratulated Muslims upon successfully completing the holy month of Ramadan and prayed for Allah’s blessings and provision.
He also called on believers to maintain the discipline and values observed during Ramadan in their daily lives.
