Kyankwazi: In a bid to bridge the digital divide and enhance e-learning, MTN, in partnership with Yellow Care, has on Friday June 7, 2024 donated 20 computers to St. Joseph Society School in Kigado village, Mulagi Sub County, Kyankwazi district.
During the ceremony, CEO MTN Mobile Money Richard Yego, in his address, made a call to the government to waive taxes on smartphones, making them more accessible to the masses.
Yego emphasized the importance of smartphones in today’s digital age, particularly with the new curriculum requiring computers and smartphones.
He revealed that despite having 20 million customers, only about 8 million use smartphones, translating to a penetration rate of 42%, which is less than half. Yego says that by waiving taxes on smartphones, more people will be able to acquire the devices, leading to increased digital inclusion.
