Masindi woman who refused to be enumerated sentenced to prison

Komugisa said that by the end of June, they will have gotten the number of people living in Masindi district.

Masindi: Sarah Kyogondeze, a resident of Kisoga Cell in Bulima Town Council in Bujenje Constituency, has been sentenced to two months in prison for refusing to be enumerated.

Kyogondeze was arrested on May 11, 2024, and detained at Masindi Central Police Station for refusing to be enumerated.

She claimed that she had already been counted by Almighty God in Heaven, so there was no need for her to be enumerated.

In an exclusive interview with this publication on Monday, February 27, 2024, Gerald Komugisa, the Masindi district population officer who doubled as district census supervisor, said that after refusing to be enumerated, Kyogondeze was arraigned in court and sentenced to prison.

‘’She was arraigned in court and charged with sabotaging government programs. Kyogondeze was sentenced to Masindi government prison for two months for refusing to be enumerated.’’

Komugisa also said that during the exercise, some individuals had refused to be enumerated, but after being detained, they accepted to be enumerated, thus being released.

‘’We also had cases where some individuals refused to be enumerated, but after spending the night(s) behind bars, they accepted to be enumerated, but in the case of Kyogondeze, she refused and was sentenced,’’ he said.

The district population officer told ugreports.co.ug that there was a challenge in some areas, mostly camps in the sub-counties of Kijunjubwa, Mirya, and Nyantonzi, which were not mapped, and this forced them to switch enumerators to those areas.

‘’Though they extended the exercise to May 26, they had already finished enumerating; however, we had a challenge in some areas that were not mapped by UBOS, mostly in the camps, and this forced us to switch enumerators to those areas.’’

Komugisa said that by the end of June, they will have gotten the number of people living in Masindi district.

He also commended the people of Masindi for the cooperation and unity they exhibited during the exercise, adding that the information they shared will help the government plan for its citizens.
