“They have caused accidents and bitten people, yet their owners cannot be traced,” Wamani said.
Masindi: Masindi Municipal authorities have started poisoning stray dogs in the municipality’s four divisions of Central, Nyangahya, Karujubu and Kigulya, following concerns over dog bites and public safety.
Patrick Asiimwe, the Masindi Municipality Deputy Town Clerk, says the municipality is working with the veterinary office to eliminate stray dogs that are roaming the town without owners.
“We are grappling with a high number of stray dogs biting residents, and we have resolved to eliminate them from the town,” Asiimwe said.
He advised dog owners to keep their dogs indoors or properly confined during the ongoing exercise to avoid having them affected.
Asiimwe said the exercise targets only dogs found straying without owners, adding that authorities are also planning a dog vaccination exercise to protect animals and residents against rabies and other diseases.
Issa Balinda Umar, the LC3 Chairperson of Central Division, identified areas including Nyangahya, Kirabo Market, Ssebala Street and Kijura as some of the hotspots for stray dogs.
Balinda said the dogs had become a security concern and appealed to residents to keep their dogs properly confined.
Boda boda riders and other residents have welcomed the municipal intervention, citing accidents, dog bites and the risk of disease transmission.
Godfrey Wamani, a boda boda rider at Rotary Stage, said stray dogs have affected their operations. “They have caused accidents and bitten people, yet their owners cannot be traced,” Wamani said.
Another resident, Julius Ategeka, said the dogs have also been attacking residents, destroying property and eating people’s food. “Once they are eliminated, it will make the town safer because there are many stray dogs putting our lives in danger,” Ategeka said.
Municipal authorities are urging dog owners to take responsibility for their animals by keeping them confined and ensuring they are vaccinated against rabies and other diseases.
