Masindi mother arrested for burning child’s mouth over groundnuts
This is not the first case of child torture reported in the district.
Masindi: Police in Masindi District have arrested a woman accused of burning her nine-year-old daughter’s mouth with hot charcoal after the child allegedly ate groundnuts belonging to a neighbour.
According to Julius Allan Hakiza, the Greater Albertine Region Police Spokesperson, the victim has been identified as Akao Mefia, 9, while the suspect is her biological mother, Akello Everlyne.
Hakiza told this publication on Monday, October 27, 2025, that the incident occurred on October 22, 2025, in Tantara Village, Kyakamese Parish, Pakanyi Sub-county. The case was later reported to Masindi Police Station on October 26 at around 3:45 a.m.
He said a case of aggravated child torture has been registered, and investigations are underway. The child has received medical treatment, and the suspect has been detained.
“This case highlights the importance of creating a safe environment for children, free from abuse and exploitation. Let’s work together to protect our children,” Hakiza said, urging parents to avoid using torture or abuse as a form of discipline.
This is not the first case of child torture reported in the district.
In January 2024, residents of Bisaju Village, Kasenene Parish, Nyantonzi Sub-county, were left in shock after a 28-year-old man, Weduga Munguriek, burned his three-year-old son’s legs as punishment for allegedly stealing a neighbour’s sauce.
In April 2025, another case emerged in Masindi where Ajelinda Ongera, 62, was arrested for allegedly burning her four-year-old grandson, Opakrwoth Kennedy, after accusing him of eating food meant for supper.
The following morning, she reportedly forced the child’s hands into a fire, causing serious burns.
According to Annet Karamagi, the Probation and Welfare Officer at Masindi District Local Government, many children in the area are suffering as a result of domestic violence and family breakdown.
“My office is registering a growing number of child neglect cases, and this is mainly due to unending domestic violence,” she said. “Parents should learn to settle their disputes instead of divorcing and abandoning their children.”
