Karuma bridge expansion joint installation completed

Built in 1964, Karuma Bridge is 61 years old and serves as a crucial transportation link.

Kiryandongo: The installation of four expansion joints at Karuma Bridge has been successfully completed, as confirmed by Hon. Tony Awany, the Nwoya County MP and Deputy Chairperson of the Physical Infrastructure Committee of Parliament.

He shared this update in an exclusive interview with this publication on Wednesday, April 2, 2025.

Hon. Awany stated that the installation of the four expansion joints at Karuma Bridge is now finished, and the concrete is in the process of curing.

He also mentioned that engineers have already moved on to Ayago Bridge along the Karuma-Olwiyo road, where they are preparing to install two more expansion joints.

Engineers are closely monitoring the strength development of the cured concrete, and the bridge is expected to reopen by April 17, 2025, or potentially sooner.

Karuma Bridge, located on the Kampala–Gulu highway at Karuma Falls, was closed to traffic in May 2024 due to significant structural issues. Following extensive repairs, the bridge was partially reopened in December 2024.

Built in 1964, Karuma Bridge is 61 years old and serves as a crucial transportation link.

It connects East and Central African countries to Kenya’s port of Mombasa and provides an important route to South Sudan, facilitating the movement of goods and services across the region.
