Fear as State House Anti-Corruption Unit camps in Kitgum Municipality
He was subsequently summoned to the municipality for further questioning.
Kitgum: In a significant move to curb corruption in local government operations, the State House Anti-Corruption Unit has set up camp at the Kitgum Municipality headquarters, launching a probe into allegations of financial mismanagement within the municipality.
According to Hon. Toolit Godfrey, the Chairperson of the Central Division in Kitgum, the investigation follows an urgent request from the Anti-Corruption Unit, which engaged him on Monday. He was subsequently summoned to the municipality for further questioning.
One of the key findings during the investigation revolves around a sum of 35 million Ugandan shillings that was reportedly withdrawn by the Assistant Town Clerk of the Central Division, intended for garbage management purposes.
The official documentation, which has now been submitted to the Anti-Corruption Unit, raises serious concerns about the potential misuse of public funds.
Hon. Toolit confirmed that the municipal officials are demanding the immediate return of the misappropriated funds to their account to ensure the money is used for its intended purpose.
In addition, the Central Division Council is contemplating a motion to transfer both the Assistant Town Clerk and the Treasurer, pending the outcome of the investigation.
The Anti-Corruption Unit’s presence in Kitgum underscores the government’s commitment to tackling corruption at all levels of governance, particularly at the local government tier, where resource mismanagement is often reported.
Local authorities have called for accountability and transparency in the handling of public funds, with many community members closely following the developments.
As investigations continue, both municipal and divisional officials are cooperating with the Anti-Corruption Unit to ensure that the matter is resolved swiftly and that any wrongdoers are held accountable for their actions.
