Farmers urged to adopt organic farming practices
They said that they have been facing a lot of sunshine, which is still affecting their onion plantation and other crops.
Rukiga: Farmers in Kamwezi Sub County Rukiga district have been urged to adopt organic farming practices and stop using dangerous chemical fertilizers and manure, which result in destroying the soil.
The call was made by the Managing Director of Transform Abafrica Product, Mr. Barham Twineamasiko, during a one-day onion farming workshop held in the compound of St. James Buhangizi Church of Uganda Buhangizi Archdeaconary in Mutoojo village, Kigara parish, Kamwezi Sub-County in Rukiga.
Mr. Twineamasiko said that the aim of the workshop was to empower farmers to adopt more environmentally-friendly and economically viable farming methods.
Mr. Twineamasiko emphasized the importance of using Transform Organic Manure, stating that it helps to increase yields across all types of plants and can be applied to all kinds of soil.
He revealed that the use of harmful chemical inputs not only damages the soil and contaminates our crops, but it can also pose serious health risks to farmers and consumers.
Mr. Twineamasiko said that it is important that you make it a habit to regularly spray your crops with good chemicals in order to get the best results.
Mpumwera Twine Hope, a farmer in Mutoojo village, Kigara parish, Kamwezi Sub-County, Rukiga district who owns an acre of onion plantation, expressed her concerns during a one-day workshop that the lot of sunshine they are experiencing is really taking a toll on their onion gardens, and if this continues, we could face significant losses during the harvest.
Mpumwera explained that her onion crop is nearing the harvesting stage, but the relentless sunshine is causing the plants to wither and the bulbs to dry up prematurely.
She lamented that they have been working hard to nurture these onions, and now they are facing the risk of losing everything due to the harsh weather conditions.
Barugahare Obed, Tukwasibwe Margaret, and Tugumisirze Jennifer thanked the Transforme Abafrica Product for what they taught farmers in Kamwezi sub-county.
They said that they have been facing a lot of sunshine, which is still affecting their onion plantation and other crops.
