Family of 15-year-old who was allegedly ‘’tortured’’ by prison wardens to death seeks justice

Afeku later died, and Andruga sustained serious injuries.

Arua: The family of the two boys who were allegedly tortured by the prison wardens in prison cell Kenya ward Arua City has started consultations on the next move.

Andruga Gerald and late Afeku Felix, residents of prison cell Arua city, were allegedly tortured by prison wardens while they had gone to fetch drinking water from a nearby well after Afeku had developed heartburn.

Afeku later died, and Andruga sustained serious injuries.

During a family meeting, Azama Samuel, the uncle to the children, said since the incident there has been no arrest, yet there is clear evidence of the individuals who allegedly tortured the boys.

“The most disturbing is that up to now there have been no arrests made, and yet the prisons know who they deployed that night. They have also registered a case of trespass. I wonder why even my son, who is still alive, has made a statement. What I know is that they want to do away with the case, which will not happen if they think they are wise. We are consulting with the community, leaders, legal teams, and civil society as we take the next move.”

However, Andruga’s condition is still worrying, and the relatives say the money that was given for the treatment is not enough.

Acika Kazimiro, a cousin brother to the victim, says the juvenile still needs specialized medical attention, which needs more than 5 million Ugandan shillings.

His body is still swollen, and previously he was passing bloody urine, though it has slightly normalized. Acika says for him to recover fully, there is a need for more than $5 million, which they appeal to the entity that allegedly caused harm to him to foot the bills.

“The problem is Andruga is experiencing kidney challenges because he was kicked in the stomach. He has been urinating for the last four days, though as of now it has stopped,’’ he explained, stressing that ‘’we have been advised by the doctors to take him for specialized treatment, which may cost more than 5 million Ugandan shillings. We therefore call upon the Uganda prisons to add some money so that we can rescue his life.” Previously, they gave us one million for treatment, but it is not enough as it is already finished.”

When contacted to know how far the investigations have reached, Ugandan police say they have not yet concluded with the investigation.

Collins Asea, the acting police public relations officer for the West Nile region, said that there have been no arrests made, but the investigations continue.

“Police are doing their best as far as investigations are concerned. However, there is no arrest made as of now, but as of now, the investigations still continue, and when concluded, we shall give a report”
