Bulambuli mudslides: Death toll rises to 22
Relentless heavy rains have left the region vulnerable to landslides, with Bulambuli’s highland terrain particularly at risk.
Bulambuli: Police have confirmed that the death toll has risen to 22 following mudslides in Bulambuli District. The landslide occurred in Buluganya Parish, Buluganya Sub-County, on the evening of November 27, 2024, at around 7 PM.
On that day, heavy rainfall lasting about six hours resulted in mudslides that swept through and buried approximately 45 households in Buluganya Parish, Buluganya Sub-County, Bulambuli District. The affected villages include Masugu, Namakyele, Mamolo, and Ntagalo.
Among the survivors are Monje James from Masugu village, Sabayo John, 25, from Namakyele village, Manana Edward from Namakyele village, Nambozo Sarah, 18, from Namakyele village, Namisi Geoffrey, Nambubolo Vincent, and Nabumboyi Alice.
The deceased have been identified as: Wolimbwa Pascal, 70, from Masugu village, Nandudu Stellah, 20, from Masugu village, Nandudu Brenda, 24, from Masugu village, Woniala Paul, 6, from Masugu village, Namasoko James, 30, from Masugu village, Nakayenze Bridget, 14, from Masugu village, An unidentified person (only stomach and intestines recovered) and Zemei Jackline, 40, from Masugu village among others.
According to Rogers Taitika, the Elgon Region Police spokesperson, the number of missing individuals currently stands at 113, with ongoing efforts to locate them.
However, police have also stated that rescue operations have been hindered by impassable roads, preventing vehicles from reaching the affected areas. The scene has been documented, and bodies that have been recovered have been taken for postmortem examinations. Victims have been delivered to Mbale Referral Hospital and Muyembe Health Center IV for further management.

Earlier, Hajjat Faheera Mpalanyi, the Resident District Commissioner of Bulambuli, stated that local authorities were working together to assist with rescue operations and recover bodies.
“We are coordinating with local authorities and rescue teams to assist survivors and recover bodies. This is a catastrophic situation,” she said.
