Bulambuli mudslides: 31 bodies recovered

Bulambuli: A devastating landslide that struck Bulambuli District last week has claimed at least 31 lives, with fears of more casualties as recovery operations continue.

The landslide, which hit the Buluganya and Sooti subcounties, buried homes, leaving many families trapped under debris. Hundreds of others have been displaced.

The search operation, led by the local community and supported by over 300 UPDF soldiers, has been further strengthened with the delivery of an excavator on Sunday.

This equipment has significantly aided in the search efforts, enabling workers to clear the thick mud and debris more efficiently.

Authorities have initiated evacuation efforts from other high-risk areas to ensure the safety of residents. According to Rodgers Taitika, the Elgon region police spokesperson, the search remains ongoing.

Recent recoveries include the body of 7-year-old Woniala David from Namakyele village, Buluganya Parish, on December 6th, and 65-year-old peasant Woniala Paul from Masugu village, Buluganya Parish, on December 7th. This brings the total number of bodies recovered to 31.
