ADEGCO renovates Okunguro Primary School Classrooms in Bukedea

He further emphasized the ongoing challenge of staff accommodation, noting that the school’s eleven teachers share just two staff houses, leaving them with no privacy or adequate shelter.

Bukedea: In a significant boost to education infrastructure, Action for Development of Grassroots Communities (ADEGCO), a local non-governmental organization, has embarked on the renovation of a four-classroom block at Okunguro Parents Primary School, located in Bukedea Town Council.

The initiative comes as a major relief to the government-aided school, which serves 780 pupils but has been grappling with severe classroom shortages. Of its two classroom blocks, only one has remained in usable condition, forcing lower primary classes to study under trees.

Speaking to this publication, Mr. Moses Ogisa, the school’s head teacher, highlighted the dire learning conditions that prompted the intervention.

“When I was brought to this school, the situation was worse. One classroom block was completely dilapidated, and we had no choice but to push learners to study from outside,” Mr. Ogisa said.

He further emphasized the ongoing challenge of staff accommodation, noting that the school’s eleven teachers share just two staff houses, leaving them with no privacy or adequate shelter.

The classroom renovation project follows preliminary visits by ADEGCO, which identified urgent needs at the school. Mr. Joseph Obore, the organization’s Executive Director, said the intervention is part of their broader mission to give back to the community.

“Our work is being implemented in phases. Phase one, involving the renovation of the classroom block and pupils’ pit latrines, is complete. The next phase will focus on improving teachers’ housing,” said Mr. Obore.

The local leadership has applauded ADEGCO’s efforts. William Wilberforce Tukei, the Resident District Commissioner (RDC) for Bukedea, commended the organization for effectively supporting government initiatives.

“It’s very rare to find small NGOs genuinely engaged in grassroots development. What ADEGCO is doing here is a perfect example of partnership that strengthens government programs,” RDC Tukei stated.

The renovation of learning facilities at Okunguro Primary School is expected to improve the learning environment, increase classroom safety, and boost morale for both pupils and teachers.
