National: The much-anticipated construction of the 39-kilometer Namagumba-Budadiri-Nalugugu Road has officially begun, following the completion of compensation for affected residents and property owners along the route.
Launched in June 2024 by Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja, the project is set to take 36 months to complete and will cost over UGX 129 billion, funded by the African Development Bank.
The Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) has contracted Shandong Luqiao Group Co. Ltd to carry out the construction works.
According to Nambozo Florence Mayonga, the State Minister for Karamoja Affairs and Woman MP for Sironko District, the construction company has already set up its camp in Mutufu, with work starting from that area.
Minister Mayonga highlighted that the road will significantly improve the movement of people and goods, boosting not only the local economy but also the tourism sector, as it connects directly to Mt. Elgon National Park.
She also mentioned other potential projects related to the road development, including the construction of Mutufu Market and the upgrading of Budadiri Health Center IV, both aimed at enhancing the local community’s livelihood.

Compensation for residents between Nalugugu and Nakiwondye has been finalized, with only a few cases remaining between Nakiwondye and Namagumba.
