Kitgum receives lifeline relief from OPM amid elephant invasions

In addition to food assistance, the iron sheets are earmarked for Kamading Primary School to address the institution’s urgent infrastructure needs.

Kitgum: On Friday, Kitgum District leadership received a crucial aid consignment from the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) to support communities impacted by recent elephant invasions.

The relief package includes 20,000 kilograms of maize flour, 10,000 kilograms of beans, and 200 iron sheets.

These supplies are aimed at alleviating the suffering of 3,113 individuals whose livelihoods have been severely affected by the destructive elephant movements across several areas, including Namokora North, Namokora Sub-county, Namokora Town Council, Mucwini East, Kiteny, Orom, Orom East, and Lalano.

In addition to food assistance, the iron sheets are earmarked for Kamading Primary School to address the institution’s urgent infrastructure needs.

The school has been struggling with inadequate facilities, and the relief is expected to significantly improve the learning environment for students.

While receiving the consignment, Deputy Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Hajji Marijan Walire expressed gratitude to the OPM for its timely and generous intervention.

He called on the District Disaster Management Committee to ensure that the aid reaches the affected individuals efficiently and transparently.

Hajji Walire also thanked the State Minister for Relief, Disaster Preparedness, and Refugees, Dr. Lilian Aber, for her relentless efforts in advocating for government support for the affected communities. Her advocacy has been instrumental in securing the much-needed assistance.

The residents of Kitgum have been grappling with significant challenges due to the frequent invasions by elephants, which have destroyed crops, damaged property, and displaced many families. The relief is expected to bring some respite to the affected communities during this difficult time.
