Boat operators hike fares after suspension of Wanseko – Panyimur ferry
Boat operators, however, view the ferry suspension as a business boost, acknowledging that demand for their services has increased.
Buliisa: The suspension of the Wanseko–Panyimur ferry has left passengers along Lake Albert facing steep fare hikes, with boat operators charging twice the previous rate due to the absence of the free ferry service.
The Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) halted the ferry’s operations last week due to technical issues, which has led to increased demand for alternative boat transportation.
The fare hike has posed a financial burden on locals, with passengers now paying 10,000 UGX per route, compared to 5,000 UGX when the ferry was operational.
For a round trip, travelers need 20,000 UGX, a significant amount for many. James Uchai, a passenger affected by the changes, expressed concerns that many people are struggling to afford the new rates.
Herbert Lukumu, the LC1 Chairperson of Wanseko Cell, has urged the government to expedite repairs, hoping to relieve locals from the high transport costs.
Boat operators, however, view the ferry suspension as a business boost, acknowledging that demand for their services has increased.
Attempts to reach UNRA’s head of corporate communications, Allan Ssempebwa, for updates on the ferry repairs have been unsuccessful.
