Traders warned about dangers of tax default

She confirmed that some staff have solicited bribes from business owners during visits.

Mbale: The Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) has launched a nationwide campaign to educate the business community about the risks associated with tax default, Ronnie Weswa writes.

During a recent sensitization session at Wash and Wills Hotel in Malukhu Industrial City Division in Mbale, URA’s acting Tax Academy Commissioner, John Tinka Katungwensi, emphasized the importance of compliance and the perils of engaging in corrupt practices.

Katungwensi highlighted that some traders collude with URA staff to evade taxes through bribery, which undermines the country’s tax revenue and hampers development. He reiterated that such actions are illegal and detrimental to national progress.

Moses Wanjala, URA’s Eastern Regional Manager, echoed these concerns, noting that the agency is losing substantial revenue due to tax defaulters and corrupt collaborations. He warned that both URA employees and business owners found engaging in corrupt activities will face severe consequences.

Wanjala urged traders to make use of direct bank payments for tax obligations, moving away from cash transactions with URA staff.

Businesswoman Sarah Wetonda from Bugema expressed appreciation for the sensitization efforts but suggested that URA staff should wear identifiable name tags to facilitate reporting of misconduct. She confirmed that some staff have solicited bribes from business owners during visits.
