Community urged to embrace technology to eliminate poverty
He highlighted the practical solutions implemented in China to combat poverty.
Jinja: Peter Kasolo Okocha, the mayor of Jinja City, emphasized the importance of technological collaboration in poverty eradication during a flag-off ceremony for a delegation from the Busoga Development Consortium to China.
The event took place on October 30, 2024, at the Civil Service College in Jinja City.
The delegation is set to study China’s village agricultural model from November 2, 2024, focusing on innovative farming techniques and strategies aimed at poverty reduction.
Mayor Kasolo highlighted the practical solutions implemented in China to combat poverty, noting that similar strategies could be transformative for Uganda, particularly in the Busoga region. “With the right mindset, anything is possible,” he asserted, calling for government partnerships with China to leverage these solutions.
He praised the punctuality and dedication of the Chinese, urging local stakeholders to harness technological opportunities for regional advancement.
The mayor stressed the importance of knowledge transfer from the training, urging Director General Mula Anthony to ensure the community benefits from the insights gained. He pointed out the need to eliminate middlemen and prioritize value addition for sustainable progress.
Mula Anthony, Director General of the Busoga Development Consortium, explained that this delegation is part of the Village Agricultural Model Program, which aims to drive socio-economic transformation in local communities. This initiative aligns with the national Parish Development Model and seeks to enhance agricultural production, health services, and environmental sustainability.
Delegation members Jonah Kayemba Junior and Veronica Kagoona expressed their enthusiasm about representing the region and are committed to applying the skills learned in China to uplift their communities through the Village Agricultural Model.
Unveiled by the Vice President in August in Namayingo District, the Village Agricultural Model framework focuses on community development. It results from a partnership between China Agricultural University and Tencent, which annually selects ten individuals for training in advanced agricultural practices.
The team will depart for China on November 2nd and return on November 15th after completing their training on agricultural skills and techniques.
