Security to investigate alleged mistreatment of refugees at Palabek Settlement

He assured that the Ugandan government is ready to act on any verified claims of mistreatment.

Kitgum: In a recent meeting, the Resident District Commissioners (RDCs) from Northern Uganda’s Lamwo, Kitgum, Karenga, Kaabong, and Amuru districts have unanimously agreed to investigate allegations of mistreatment of refugees in the Palabek Refugee Settlement.

Mr. Komakech William, the RDC for Lamwo, reported that approximately 84,000 refugees currently reside in Palabek. He assured that the Ugandan government is ready to act on any verified claims of mistreatment, acknowledging the ongoing disputes within the settlement, often rooted in conflicts from South Sudan.

Speaking during a two-day Cross Border Review Meeting at Acaki Lodge in Kitgum, William emphasized the importance of cooperation between host communities and refugees, noting their harmonious coexistence due to effective governance structures in place.

Mr. Odong Stephen Latek, the RDC from Kaabong, highlighted the difficult reality of being a refugee, stating that no one desires this status, and that true comfort can only be found in one’s homeland. He raised concerns about some refugees who seek to obtain refugee cards for opportunities beyond Africa.

Kitgum RDC Mr. Ssegawa Nehemiah Jimmy Ebil encouraged refugees facing mistreatment to voice their concerns to the appropriate authorities. He proposed the formation of an independent committee to thoroughly investigate these allegations and stressed the need to reduce dependency among refugees.
