Arua woman burns child over food

He says that upon learning of the incident, the police immediately opened a case under reference GEF 010/2024.

Arua: Police in Arua district are holding Zainabu Ayikolu, 45, on allegations of burning a child’s fingers as punishment for eating food and sauce without permission.

The suspect, a resident of Lazoo Village, Lazebu Parish, Logiri Subcounty, Arua Vurra District, was subsequently arrested and is currently in police custody as investigations continue.

Collins Asea Collins, the acting regional police spokesperson for West Nile, explains that it is alleged that in May 2023, Ms. Ayikolu requested custody of the child from her brother, Mr. Elima Benard, residing in Madi Okollo District.

However, last week, Ms. Ayikolu reportedly found the child had taken food and sauce without permission, which led to her allegedly burning the child’s fingers as punishment.

Asea says that upon learning of the incident, the police immediately opened a case under reference GEF 010/2024.

‘’A team of detectives and uniformed personnel visited the scene to gather evidence, and the victim has been taken to Logiri Health Center for medical examination and treatment,’’ he said.

The regional police mouthpiece asserts that the victim, a five-year-old girl (names withheld), a pupil, and a resident of the same area have been under the care of the suspect.

Asea notes that the Uganda Police Force takes incidents of child abuse and torture very seriously, adding that there are many ways of disciplining a child, for example, the reward method, but torture is not one of them.
