Hoima patriotism tree planting campaign launched
The trees were planted in all schools in Hoima City, both private and government, primary and secondary.
Hoima: The Hoima city patriotism tree planting campaign was officially launched on Monday, June 10, 2024, with a call to all stakeholders to plant trees with a purpose.
The campaign was led by KCB Bank in partnership with the National Forestry Authority (NFA) and the National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA), together with Hoima City.
The trees were planted in all schools in Hoima City, both private and government, primary and secondary.
While speaking at the launch held at Duhaga Secondary School, Alex Obonyo, the national forestry authority manager in charge of the Kisindi sector, revealed that, as the NFA, they are too much into supporting tree planting.
Obonyo said they pledged to deliver 20,000 tree seedlings and have so far delivered 5000 seedlings, and the remaining 15,000 will be delivered any time they are needed.
He expressed that they are not giving seedlings to be wasted but for growing.
Sophie Katusabe, the education officer for Hoima West Division, urged the school head teachers to make sure that the trees they have planted are managed well because, as the education department in the city, they will be monitoring the trees they have planted from time to time.
Dr. Joseph Ruyonga, Member of Parliament for Hoima West City Division, revealed that sometimes the public destroys the environment, not knowing they are destroying themselves.
Dr. Ruyonga says environmental degradation has caused the problem of water shortage since water tables have become low, adding that a lack of trees around is the main cause of respiratory diseases.
He also encouraged the general public to use trees to demarcate their land boundaries.
Diana Komukama, the head of marketing at KCB Bank, unveiled that their target as KCB Bank is to plant 10,000 trees in Hoima City, but for now they have planted 2000.
Komukama says it’s their social cooperation responsibility to communities, so they have requested that schools care for the fruit trees they have received so that they grow since they will be coming back to check on them.
The chief guest, Badru Mugabi, the RCC Hoima, said that most cities and towns have been so much degraded by people.
Mugabi added that by launching the patriotism tree planting in Hoima City, they are following the presidential directive on tree planting in schools and hospitals, among other places.
