Nabbanja tasks health workers with effective service delivery
This prompted residents and leaders to identify five acres of land where structures for the new health center would be constructed.
Buliisa: The Prime Minister of Uganda, Rt. Hon. Robinah Nabbanja, has tasked health workers with effectively and promptly delivering health services to residents.
While commissioning the Shs1.2 billion Butiaba Health Centre III in Butiaba Town Council Buliisa district, Nabbanja said that it’s important for health workers to deliver effective services to the residents.
The premier also challenged residents to embrace disease prevention services as opposed to curative ones. ‘’Women should fully utilize the health facility to boost antenatal services.’’
Nabbanja also instructed the health ministry to immediately equip the health facility with enough drugs and staff.
Fred Lukumu, the Buliisa District LCV Chairperson, expressed relief that the new health facility would address the challenges faced by residents in accessing appropriate healthcare.
Norah Bigirwa, the Buliisa district woman member of Parliament, highlighted the suffering experienced by patients, especially expectant mothers, when the former premises were submerged.
She urged the government to establish and equip more health facilities in the district to accommodate the influx of people working in the oil sector.
Allan Atugonza, the Buliisa Member of Parliament, emphasized the need for an ambulance, given the facility’s distance from the community.
He also called for the recruitment of additional staff to address the current shortage, where out of the 19 recommended staff, there were only 14.
Residents speak out
Residents expressed gratitude for the government’s swift action in addressing health challenges, as the new facility is expected to significantly improve health service delivery in Butiaba and its surrounding areas of Walukuba, Nyamukuta, Sonsio, and Bugoigo.
Juliet Alinda, a resident of Butiaba town council, has applauded the government for responding quickly to tackle the health challenges in the area, saying the new facility will help boost effective health service delivery.
Stephen Mbidi, a resident of Butiaba town council, says the government should avail the facility with enough drugs.
Majid Ajaruva, also a resident, explains that many people from Butiaba town council would trek long distances of between 15 and 20 km to Biiso Health Center IV and Buliisa General Hospital, respectively, to access health services.
About the health facility
In 2021, floods submerged hundreds of homes and government institutions, including schools and health centers, along the Lake Albert shores in Buliisa district.
Butiaba Health Centre III wasn’t spared; this prompted the district authorities to temporarily shift it to the sub-county headquarters.
The floods affected various facilities at the old center, including staff quarters, maternity wards, male and female wards, the store, and the Outpatient Department (OPD).
This prompted residents and leaders to identify five acres of land where structures for the new health center would be constructed.
In April 2022, the government contracted the Uganda People’s Defense Force (UPDF) Engineering Brigade and allocated 1.2 billion shillings towards the construction of structures for the health center.
On Friday, April 5, 2024, the Prime Minister of Uganda, Rt. Hon. Robinah Nabbanja, commissioned the health center.
The newly constructed health facility is comprised of the maternity, children, female and male wards, staff quarters, the outpatient department (OPD and a waiting room, among others.
