Hoima City residents demonstrate over poor road

He says the boda boda riders are now forced to pass through people’s compounds since the roads are impassable.

Hoima: Residents of Kiryatete-Kibati in Hoima East City Division on Thursday demonstrated over the poor road network of Kiryatete-Kibati Road.

The residents dug holes in the middle of the road, planted banana sacks, burned tires, and poured rubbish on the road.

William Kasangaki, a resident of Kiryatete and also a boda boda rider, disclosed that residents have decided to demonstrate because the road is in a very bad state.

‘’We have decided to demonstrate the poor state of the road; there are many potholes, which cause jams and sometimes accidents.’’

Kasangaki stressed that it’s not the first time residents have demonstrated over the same road, but the city has failed to maintain it.

He says at times, especially during the rainy season, they even plant maize on this road as a way of showing dissatisfaction, thus requesting the government to construct a good road.

Kasangaki reveals that vehicles at times fall into the holes on the road created by rainwater since the road has no curbs.

He says the boda boda riders are now forced to pass through people’s compounds since the roads are impassable.

Johnson Wamara, a resident, asserted that in most cases during the rainy season, vehicles get stuck in the mud, adding that it affects service delivery.

Mary Asiimwe said that they have resorted to using alternative routes due to the poor state of the road. ”During the rainy season, we use alternative routes due to the poor state of the road.’’

Other road users who preferred anonymity said it’s their area councilors who have not done enough to represent them and issues affecting the area.

Efforts to get a comment from Hoima East Division City Mayor Bosco Muhanuuzi were futile by press time since he didn’t respond to our repeated phone calls by press time.
