Masindi: The Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) on Friday donated relief items to families that were affected by hailstorms in the sub-counties of Miirya, Pakanyi, Bwijanga, Kiruli, Kimengo, and Kijunjubwa in Masindi district.

The families were ravaged by the hailstorm in September last year; crops like maize, beans, groundnuts, banana plantations, and houses, among others, were devastated.

The relief items received from OPM include 13,000 kg of maize flour, 6,500 kg of beans, and 300 pieces of tarpaulin.

They will be distributed to 655 households, including 338 in Miirya, 165 in Bwijanga, 92 in Kijunjubwa, 32 in Pakanyi, 15 in Kimengo, and 13 households in Kiruli Sub County.

Speaking during the handover of the relief package to the sub-county chairpersons at Masindi district health headquarters, Musa Kyamisa, the principal assistant secretary, cautioned the chairpersons to give out the relief strictly to families that were affected by the hailstorm.

‘’The relief package is strictly for the people who were affected by the hailstorm; kindly donate them to only the victims.’’

Emmy Ngabirano, the Masindi District Resident Commissioner, tasked the chairpersons to prioritize PWDs, women-headed families, and orphans while giving out relief.

‘’We must prioritize the families headed by PWDs, children, and women, then we, the men, can come in later. Let’s not rush donate and forget the most vulnerable.’’

Ngabirano also cautioned the beneficiaries against settling in the flood-prone areas, noting that history will repeat itself and stressing that they cannot continue with this recurrence.

The RDC also disclosed that they are going to keep pursuing the office of prime minister for a long time to lobby for them to plant materials where needed and ensure the dream of the next season is achieved.

‘’I want to urge the beneficiaries for accountability. You have had issues with OPM, and sometimes it’s the issue of accountability, so if you don’t account, you will push the district into a problem. Please do accountability by donating to the right beneficiaries and then bring back the returns.’’

Speaking on behalf of Cosmas Byaruhanga, the district LC5 chairperson, Pamela Nyakato, the district secretary for finance, asked the LC3 chairpersons to be transparent while donating the items.
