Kikuube: A 30-year-old woman in Kikuube district has been arrested for using the recently donated government mosquito net to trap white ants.

The suspect identified as Catherine Nyakato, a resident of Kyabatarya cell in Buhimba town council was arrested on Monday.

The Kikuube Resident District Commissioner (RDC), Amlan Tumusiime, told this publication that he was shocked to find the above-mentioned woman using the mosquito net that was given to her last week by the Ministry of Health to trap white ants.

‘’During my routine monitoring of government programs, I was shocked to find a new mosquito net that was given to the suspect on Tuesday last week and was being used to trap white ants,’’ he wondered.

Tumusiime says that there is a need for local leaders and other government officials to monitor and sensitize the public to ensure that they apprehend all the people misusing these mosquito nets.

He adds that many people are misusing the nets by using them as fishing nets to construct bathrooms and chicken houses, while others cut them into small pieces for juice and local breweries (Kwete).

‘’I’m challenging local leaders and other government officials to be on the lookout to ensure that they apprehend all the people misusing the recently donated mosquito nets,’’ he challenged them.

He notes that the misuse of government mosquito nets is mostly common on different landing sites in Lake Albert and that, as district leaders, they are ready to arrest and punish any beneficiary who will be found using the nets for a purpose they are not intended for.

Tumusiime noted that the mosquito net distribution drive in Kikuube is aimed at curtailing malaria incidences, adding that it is the responsibility of the local leaders and village health team (VHTS) to ensure that the locals use the nets for their intended purpose.
