4% of Masindi hospital staff have health complications

He said the district would also advertise vacant positions to recruit additional health workers for health facilities across the district.

Masindi: Masindi District General Hospital is grappling with a critical staffing shortage, with only 117 health workers against an approved establishment of 343, as district authorities raise concerns over staff welfare and service delivery.

Patrick Wobusobozi, the Masindi District LCV Chairperson said the hospital, which serves a population of 342,635 people, is operating at 34% of its approved staffing capacity.

Speaking during an extraordinary district council session recently, Wobusobozi said the staffing gap, coupled with health complications among some workers and other welfare challenges, was affecting service delivery.

He revealed that about four percent of the hospital staff have health complications, while social and economic challenges are also affecting their work.

Wobusobozi further attributed staff burnout across the district to challenges involving the District Service Commission, which is responsible for recruitment and other human resource functions.

He acknowledged that the hospital had been experiencing several challenges, including tensions among top management, but said district authorities had intervened to address the issues.

“We have intervened and are working closely with the hospital management to ensure that service delivery improves,” Wobusobozi said.

The district chairperson added that authorities were implementing a directive by the Minister for Local Government, Balaam Barugahara, to transfer health workers as part of efforts to address staffing gaps.

He said the district would also advertise vacant positions to recruit additional health workers for health facilities across the district.

Wobusobozi pledged to maintain zero tolerance for corruption in the District Service Commission, saying recruitment and human resource management should be handled transparently to improve staffing and service delivery.

The staffing shortage remains a major challenge for Masindi District General Hospital, which is expected to provide healthcare services to a population of more than 342,000 people despite operating with about a third of its approved workforce.
