Bunyoro clan leaders agree to establish Kingdom Parliament
He added that he would appoint a 21-member committee to help vet the proposed members of Parliament.
Hoima: Bunyoro Kitara Kingdom clan leaders and members of the Babito clan have agreed to work with the Kingdom’s Chief Prince, Engineer Fred Mugenyi Rucunya, to establish a Kingdom Parliament aimed at resolving the prolonged leadership crisis.
The resolution follows two days of meetings held at the Bunyoro Kitara Kingdom Palace and Chambers, where participants discussed ways of restoring unity and strengthening the Kingdom’s leadership structures.
Members of the Babito clan, who met at the palace on Sunday, resolved to cooperate with Rucunya, also known as Okwiri, in efforts to address the disputes that have affected the Kingdom for nearly three years.
During a subsequent meeting with clan leaders, participants agreed to appoint members of the proposed Bunyoro Kitara Kingdom Parliament.
The Parliament is expected to vet regents who will help manage the Kingdom’s affairs on behalf of the ailing Omukama, Dr. Solomon Iguru Gafabusa I.
Twaha Mbabazi, the chairperson of the Bunyoro Clan Leaders Forum, said another meeting had been scheduled for October 24, 2026, when members of the Kingdom Parliament are expected to be elected.
Mbabazi said the establishment of Parliament would provide a framework for addressing the leadership crisis and restoring stability within the Kingdom.
Eng. Rucunya said the Kingdom expected to have its Parliament in place within two weeks.
He added that he would appoint a 21-member committee to help vet the proposed members of Parliament.
The proposed arrangement is intended to establish a leadership structure that can support the administration of the Kingdom during the Omukama’s illness.
Bunyoro Kitara Kingdom has operated without a fully established leadership structure for nearly three years, amid disagreements over its administration.
The latest resolutions have raised hopes among clan leaders and members of the Babito clan that the proposed Parliament could help resolve the disputes, restore unity and strengthen the Kingdom’s governance.
