Garbage collected on National Cleaning Day rots in Masindi town
Balinda has appealed to residents to remain patient and avoid littering as the authorities complete the collection exercise.
Masindi: Residents and business operators in Masindi Municipality’s Central Division have raised concern over heaps of garbage collected during the National Cleaning Day exercise that have remained uncollected and are now rotting along the streets.
The garbage was collected from different parts of Masindi Town during the exercise held on Saturday, but by Tuesday, some of the waste had not yet been removed.
Elvis Patrick Businge, a worker in Masindi Town, says the rotting garbage is affecting businesses and exposing residents and workers to potential health risks.
“The garbage is affecting our workplaces and exposing people to health risks,” Businge says.
He has called on the municipal authorities to acquire additional garbage trucks to improve waste collection in the town.
Stephen Mugisa, a mechanic operating along Perse Street, says the municipality had several trucks, including hired vehicles, during the cleaning exercise, but some of the garbage has remained uncollected.
Mugisa says authorities should strengthen supervision after cleaning exercises to ensure that all waste collected is removed promptly.
Joseph Kiiza, another mechanic along Tongue Street, says the uncollected garbage is disrupting their work despite residents complying with the directive to clean their surroundings.
Jowab Kirungi, a welder in Masindi Town, says some of the garbage was dumped near food outlets and workplaces, creating a potential health risk.
Joseph Enyeya has also appealed to municipal authorities to ensure timely collection and proper disposal of garbage.
In response, Balinda Issa Umar, the LC3 Chairperson for Masindi Central Division, attributed the delay to the large volume of garbage generated during the National Cleaning Day exercise.
Balinda says much of the division’s manpower was deployed to Kirasa, while the three available garbage trucks were distributed to different areas.
He says garbage collection started on Monday and was expected to be completed by the end of Tuesday. Balinda has appealed to residents to remain patient and avoid littering as the authorities complete the collection exercise.
He says the division has also procured litter bins and urged landlords to provide garbage collection sacks to facilitate proper collection and loading of waste onto garbage trucks.
In July this year, Prime Minister Rt. Hon. Robina Nabbanja declared the last Saturday of every month as the National Cleaning Day, aimed at promoting cleanliness and proper waste management across the country.
