UNESCO asked to support modernisation of Mutoto Cultural Site
The proposed development is expected to strengthen Mutoto’s role as a centre for preserving and promoting the cultural heritage of the Bamasaba.
Mbale: The Bamasaba Cultural Institution has asked the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to support plans to transform the historic Mutoto Cultural Site in Mbale into a modern cultural centre.
The request was made by His Highness the Umukuka of Bugisu, Jude Mike Mudoma, during a meeting with a UNESCO delegation that paid a courtesy visit to the cultural leader on Saturday afternoon.
According to the spokesperson of the Bamasaba Cultural Institution, Hon. Steven Masiga, the proposed development will include a modern palace, amphitheatre, stadium, offices and other cultural facilities.
“His Highness the Umukuka has requested officials of UNESCO to help in the construction of the Mutoto Cultural Site into a modern cultural centre, with a modern palace, amphitheatre, modern stadium and other related cultural facilities,” Masiga told this publication by telephone from Mbale City.
The UNESCO team included Ms. Mariana from Mexico and Dan Kawesi from the UNESCO Uganda office.
The Umukuka was accompanied by several officials from the Bugisu Cultural Institution, including Hon. Priscilla Khaitsa, Minister for Museums; Hon. Moses Kutoi, Minister for Culture and Heritage; and Hon. Richard Wambede, Minister for Umukuka Affairs.
“I too attended the meeting,” Masiga said.
Masiga said the UNESCO delegation pledged to present the proposal to the organisation’s relevant authorities for consideration. “The UNESCO team promised to table the issue of construction of Mutoto Cultural Site into a modern cultural centre, with a palace and amphitheatre, to the highest protocols of UNESCO for consideration,” he said.
The spokesperson said the cultural institution is determined to transform the current appearance of the Mutoto site and make it a major cultural and heritage centre.
“As a cultural institution, we are determined to change the current face of Mutoto with a modern palace and several offices for every minister in the cultural institution,” Masiga said.
