Missing Masindi boda boda rider found dead in sugarcane plantation
The body had visible injuries, and investigations are ongoing to identify and arrest the suspects.
Masindi: Police in Masindi District have launched investigations into the murder of a 20-year-old boda boda rider whose body was discovered in a sugarcane plantation days after he was reported missing.
The deceased has been identified as Wonya Azalia, a resident of Katakungirwa Village in Ntoma Parish, Bwijanga Sub-county, Bujenje County.
According to ASP Solomon Mugisa, the Albertine North Regional Community Liaison Officer and Acting Regional Police Spokesperson, Wonya disappeared on July 19, 2026, after reportedly being hired by a customer from Katakungirwa boda boda stage to transport them to Kyamalorere Village.
When he failed to return, his relatives reported a missing person case at Bwijanga Police Station, prompting police and community members to begin a search.
The search ended on Wednesday evening when detectives found the rider’s decomposing body in a sugarcane plantation in Byebega Village, Bwijanga Sub-county.
“The deceased’s body was recovered from a sugarcane plantation in Byebega Village. His motorcycle, registration number UGE 636P, was found about 300 metres from where the body was discovered. The body had visible injuries, and investigations are ongoing to identify and arrest the suspects,” Mugisa said.
Police say the motorcycle was recovered intact near the crime scene, while detectives continue gathering evidence to establish the motive behind the killing.
Mugisa appealed to residents to support police investigations by volunteering information that could lead to the arrest of the perpetrators.
“We appeal to members of the public to cooperate with security agencies by providing any information that can help us identify and arrest those responsible for this murder,” he said.
He also expressed concern over the increasing cases of murder and theft in the Albertine region, attributing the trend largely to drug abuse and idleness among sections of the youth.
“The increasing cases of murder and theft are largely linked to drug abuse and idleness among some youths. Communities should work closely with the police to help curb crime,” Mugisa added.
The body was taken to Masindi Hospital Mortuary for a postmortem examination before being handed over to the family for burial.
Police investigations into the murder are ongoing.
