Kinyara, Victoria Sugar Ltd harmonize sugarcane trade in Bunyoro
Under the agreement, both companies committed to strengthening cooperation, promoting fair trade practices, protecting farmers’ interests and fostering harmony within the sugar sector.
Kampala: The managements of Kinyara Sugar Limited and Victoria Sugar Limited have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at harmonizing sugarcane trade practices in the Bunyoro sub-region.
Speaking after the signing, Balaam Barugahara, the outgoing Minister State for Children and Youth Affairs said he facilitated and witnessed the agreement between the two sugar millers, noting that young people constitute the largest percentage of Uganda’s labour force and stand to benefit from a stable sugar industry.
According to Balaam, following a series of constructive meetings held over the past several months, Kinyara Sugar Limited Director Rajbir Singh Rai and Victoria Sugar Managing Director Jiyani Alpesh signed the agreement during a final meeting held at the minister’s offices in Kampala today.
The MoU seeks to address the challenge of rampant sugarcane theft in the Bunyoro sub-region, a problem that has negatively affected farmers, millers, workers and the stability of the sugar value chain.
Under the agreement, both companies committed to strengthening cooperation, promoting fair trade practices, protecting farmers’ interests and fostering harmony within the sugar sector.
Balaam welcomed the initiative as a significant step towards the growth and development of Uganda’s sugar industry, emphasizing that dialogue, cooperation and unity are essential in addressing challenges affecting farmers and other stakeholders in Bunyoro while safeguarding employment opportunities for young people.
