Man on run after killing lover in Masindi

Haliya later returned home, where her condition reportedly deteriorated before she died.

Masindi: Police in Masindi District are hunting for a 40-year-old man accused of killing his lover following a domestic altercation in Alimugonza Central Village, Pakanyi Sub-county.

ASP Solomon Mugisa, the Albertine North Regional Community Liaison Officer and acting regional police spokesperson, identified the deceased as Jenifer Haliya, 39, while the suspect has only been identified as James. Both are residents of Alimugonza Central Village.

According to Mugisa, the incident occurred at around 1pm on Tuesday at a bar in Alimugonza Trading Centre after the couple reportedly developed a misunderstanding. During the altercation, James allegedly kicked Haliya in the chest, causing her to bleed from the mouth and nose.

Haliya later returned home, where her condition reportedly deteriorated before she died.

Police officers later visited the scene and transferred the body to Masindi Hospital mortuary for a postmortem examination.

Mugisa condemned the increasing cases of gender-based violence in the region and said police had launched a manhunt for the suspect, who is currently on the run and expected to face murder charges upon arrest.

In a related development, police also confirmed the arrest of Eric Eritia, who is accused of strangling his wife, Joyce Apio, to death in Kiyira Cell, Biiso Town Council, last week.

According to Mugisa, Eritia was arrested on Saturday from Kigorobya in neighboring Hoima District and is currently detained at Biiso Police Station awaiting arraignment before court on murder charges.
