Police arrest 14 children working in bars, recover stolen gun in Hoima

He further called upon all stakeholders to take collective responsibility in ending child labour within communities.

Hoima: Police in Hoima have arrested 14 children found working in bars during an operation aimed at curbing child labour in the city.

According to Julius Allan Hakiza, the Albertine South Regional Police Spokesperson, the operation revealed a significant number of underage children employed as bar attendants.

“We discovered that many underage children are working in bars during our ongoing operations. Fourteen children have been arrested and are currently detained at Hoima Central Police Station undergoing interrogation to ascertain their ages,” Hakiza said.

He emphasized that the operation is intended to eliminate child labour in Hoima City and other parts of the Albertine region.

“This operation is aimed at curbing child labour in the city and other parts of the region,” he added.

Hakiza noted that the police are conducting the crackdown in collaboration with Hoima City authorities. He urged parents and guardians to prioritize their children’s education instead of sending them to urban areas to work in bars at a young age.

He further called upon all stakeholders to take collective responsibility in ending child labour within communities.

In a related development, police in Hoima City on Monday recovered a gun that had been stolen from a private security guard on February 20, 2026.

Hakiza explained that the firearm was stolen from Yosam Turyatemba, a private guard who had been deployed at the NSSF offices at the time of the incident. The weapon was later recovered abandoned near Best of the Best along Kampala Road.

Police have not yet identified the suspect responsible for the theft.

Hakiza also cautioned private security companies against deploying a single guard at duty stations, advising that at least two guards should be assigned to enhance security and reduce vulnerability.

Police investigations into the matter are ongoing.
