Umukuka to attend 40th NRA national liberation day celebrations in Kololo

Masiga added that the Bugisu region expects individuals who participated in the liberation struggle whether as fighters or civilian collaborators to be formally recognized, either in their lifetime or posthumously.

Kampala: His Highness the Umukuka III, Jude Mike Mudoma, the cultural head of the Bugisu Cultural Institution, is expected to attend the 40th National Resistance Army (NRA) Liberation Day celebrations scheduled for January 26 at Kololo Independence Grounds in Kampala.

The development was confirmed to UGReports by the spokesperson of the Bugisu Cultural Institution, Hon. Steven Masiga, who said that the Umukuka will attend the event as a guest of government.

Masiga noted that the Bugisu region shares a strong historical bond with the National Resistance struggle and Uganda’s broader liberation history.

“As Bugisu, we have a special connection to the liberation struggle. The fight to liberate Uganda began here in 1973, where the current President, Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, survived a deadly ambush,” Masiga said.

He further explained that the liberation struggle eventually led to the National Resistance Movement (NRM) coming to power, which later resulted in the restoration of cultural institutions, including the Bugisu Cultural Institution that had been abolished in the 1960s shortly after their establishment.

Masiga emphasized that the contribution of the Bamasaaba people to the NRA/NRM struggle was central and significant, arguing that their role was among the most impactful in Uganda’s liberation history.

He also highlighted that His Highness the Umukuka is personally connected to the NRM struggle, particularly through the Elgon 13, an offshoot of the FRONASA group, which waged armed resistance against what he described as Obote’s negative forces from the Mt. Elgon region.

The theme of this year’s celebrations is “A Tribute to Patriots Who Ushered in Fundamental Change.” The event will be held at Kololo Independence Grounds, with President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni expected to officiate as the Chief Guest.

Masiga added that the Bugisu region expects individuals who participated in the liberation struggle whether as fighters or civilian collaborators to be formally recognized, either in their lifetime or posthumously.
