Masindi leaders challenged to organize annual commemorations to honor Dr. Abriga’s legacy
In September 2025, Masindi High Court sentenced his widow, Betty Cherotich and her two relatives Martin Kipsang and Joshua Namureng to 35 years in prison each, for murdering the doctor.
Masindi: A section of residents in Masindi district on Wednesday held a memorial service to honor the legacy of former Masindi district health officer, late Dr. Jino Abiriga, as today marked 2 years since his death.
The residents led by the Clergy, Abiriga’s children, relatives, Wanaichi clinic staff, and members of the public convened the memorial service at Wanaichi clinic, a medical facility founded by the slain doctor, in Masindi town.
Presiding over the service, Reverend Vincent Tumusiime Atwooki, the Vicar of All Saints Church in Masindi-town described Abiriga as someone who sacrificed his life to save people’s lives in Masindi district.
Reverend Tumusiime challenged Masindi district leaders to consider holding district wide annual commemorations on every 7th January, to honor Dr. Abiriga’s legacy.
Dr. Philliam Alion, the Wanaichi Clinic in-charge, pledged to uphold Dr. Abiriga’s legacy by maintaining quality and affordable health services at the clinic.
Late Dr. Abiriga who is regarded by many as one of the best and passionate medics Masindi district has ever had, was brutally murdered on 7th January 2024.
