Over 3,000 traditional surgeons to be trained for 2026 Imbalu circumcision
"These trainings are critical for maintaining the cultural integrity and safety of the Imbalu circumcision process," said Masiga.

Mbale: The spokesperson for the Bugisu Cultural Institution, Hon. Steven Masiga, has revealed that preparations are in full swing to train over 3,000 traditional surgeons ahead of the 2026 Imbalu circumcision ceremony.
Speaking to this publication, Masiga confirmed that the institution is in advanced stages of organizing this training program. “Today, we held a planning meeting with several district chairpersons of surgeons from the Bugisu region to prepare for the upcoming traditional circumcision training,” Masiga explained. “We agreed on several key points, including the meeting dates and the issuance of mandatory certificates for all traditional surgeons in Bugisu.”
His Highness, Umukuka III Jude Mike Mudoma, will oversee the issuance of official certificates for all traditional surgeons on behalf of the Bugisu Cultural Institution.
The certificates will bear the seal of the institution, and only those who have received certification will be allowed to perform circumcisions during the Imbalu ceremony.
“This is a cultural decree from Umukuka III that every traditional surgeon must be issued a cultural certificate before they are allowed to practice circumcision,” Masiga added.
The meeting was presided over by the Minister for Culture, Hon. Moses Kutoi, and attended by key figures involved in the planning.
Hon. Dr. Namome Robinah, the Minister for Health in the Bugisu Cultural Institution, will work closely with other stakeholders, including the Uganda AIDS Commission, UNICEF, and the Ministry of Health, to ensure that the training program is comprehensive and well-executed.
“These trainings are critical for maintaining the cultural integrity and safety of the Imbalu circumcision process,” said Masiga.
Looking ahead, the Umukuka III has also pledged to establish a savings organization for the traditional surgeons, as well as a constitution to regulate their activities and leadership.
This initiative aims to provide better support and structure for the surgeons, ensuring the smooth operation of the circumcision ceremonies in the future.
