Tayebwa: Education Must Serve Communities, Not Profit

Delivering the President’s message, Rt. Hon. Tayebwa underscored the role of education as a transformational tool for both individuals and communities. He noted that Uganda must reclaim ownership of its research agenda.

“Investing in education is a service, not a business, especially when it benefits our communities,” he said.

“For many years, research was left to donors whose priorities often did not align with Uganda’s needs. KIU must now focus on research output and innovation that directly drive national development. Success is grounded in character, hard work, and purpose not merely connections.”

He urged the graduates to uphold integrity, embrace innovation, and commit themselves to advancing fields that support Uganda’s growth.

KIU Vice Chancellor Professor Muhammed Ngoma congratulated the graduating class, reminding them that completing university is only the start of a lifelong journey of learning and service.

“As you leave our gates today, remember that this is the beginning of your new journey,” he said.

“Carry with you creativity, integrity, and a spirit of service. The knowledge and skills you have acquired should empower you to become true agents of change in your communities and beyond.”

Prof. Ngoma highlighted KIU’s transformation over the last 25 years, noting its rise to international recognition.

“We have redefined what it means to be a university in a rapidly changing world. Our curricula are designed not only to impart knowledge but to equip learners with relevant competencies that position them for global competitiveness,” he added.
