Kanya mobilises support for Kyibumba flood victims
He condemned hatred driven by politics, saying political seasons end but communities remain.
Kisoro: The Bufumbira East NRM flag bearer, Hon. Rolland Kanya Nkurumah, has assured residents of Kyibumba 1 Parish in Chahafi Town Council that he is engaging well-wishers to support families affected by the recent floods, even as he continues to follow up the matter with the Ministry of Disaster Preparedness.
Earlier this month, heavy floods devastated Kyibumba Parish, destroying crops, leaving several families homeless, and submerging classrooms at Kyibumba Primary School.
Speaking to our reporter at his home in Nyakabande Subcounty, Hon. Kanya said he is fully aware of the hardships residents are facing—particularly hunger—following what he described as a recurrent challenge in the area. He revealed that arrangements with friends and well-wishers are already underway to deliver relief support in the shortest time possible.
Hon. Kanya further called on the people of Bufumbira East to rally behind him so he can continue pushing for government compensation for the affected households. He also urged residents to maintain peaceful campaigns and elections, cooperate, and work together for the development of the constituency.
Using the opportunity, he commended the incumbent Bufumbira East MP, Dr. James Nsababuturo, for his integrity and loyalty to the NRM after withdrawing from the parliamentary race following his loss in the party primaries. Hon. Kanya said he is ready to build on the projects initiated by Dr. Nsababuturo.
However, in a phone interview, Dr. Nsababuturo reiterated that his decision to withdraw from the race followed consultations with President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, the party leadership, and other stakeholders. He noted that many people have lost the understanding of the true value of a vote, which he said was one of the major reasons behind his decision to step aside.
Dr. Nsababuturo also expressed concern that political parties have contributed to divisionism in the country, stating that he wished Uganda could operate without them to enhance togetherness and genuine democracy. He condemned hatred driven by politics, saying political seasons end but communities remain.
He urged voters to understand the power of their vote, emphasizing that good leadership is determined through the ballot as the country heads into the forthcoming general elections.
