Hoima residents blame UNRA for flooding on most roads

Hoima: Residents in Hoima have blamed the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) for the shoddy work, saying it is resulting in flooding on most roads in the country during rainy seasons.
This follows the traffic along Hoima-Kampala Road being paralyzed after the River Kafu burst its banks due to flooding at Karongo Village, 19.8 km from Hoima.
Abraham Musinguzi, a resident of Butema and also a driver, told this piblication that it’s UNRA’s fault because they were forewarned about the weather and knew very well that the water levels would rise.
Musinguzi says UNRA never clears the mud and papyruses in the culverts and ends up blocking them.
John Gakumba, a resident of Wagesa village, says the learners from Kyabusakazi and Kikonda may fail to do their final exams due to the flooding of the road that leads them to schools in Hoima.
He blamed UNRA for constructing the road poorly because the bridge is very short, yet it was supposed to be high for water to flow freely.
The aggrieved resident says they cannot access markets in Katanabirwa and Mbali to sell or buy animals and are worried that if the situation persists, poverty may eat them up.
Francis Wobusobozi, the head teacher of Katereiga Primary School, said the floods have affected their learners and they are to wait until further notice.
Wobusobozi says some of the learners have been forced to stay with nearby relatives, while those who don’t are, in the meantime, in the boarding section with the primary seven candidates.
The District Police Commander (DPC) Hoima, Jackson Bogere, revealed that the situation at Kafu is under control and appreciated the members of the public for their cooperation.
Bogere, however, dismissed allegations that there are people who have died due to the floods, saying that currently no one is allowed to cross to come to Kyankwanzi or Hoima.
He adds that currently all vehicles from Kampala to Hoima and beyond are using Masindi Road.
