Maracha: Concerns are mounting in Maracha County as the campaign team of the NRM flag bearer for the Member of Parliament race is accused of resorting to blackmail, insults, and personal attacks instead of presenting their manifesto and development agenda to voters.
According to observers, the alleged blackmail has become a common feature at several campaign rallies, occurring under the watch of the NRM flag bearer Uhuru Nelson and senior NRM leaders in Maracha District. The attacks have reportedly been directed primarily at Obeta Moses Drakua, an NRM-leaning independent candidate, although other candidates are also in the race.
On 13 November, during a rally in Obica Parish, Obiba Subcounty, an agent of the NRM candidate, Yuda Bileti, reportedly launched personal attacks against Obeta branding him a property grabber, a liar, and a source of misfortune in his family.
However, in a response, the victim of the blackmail, candidate Obeta Moses Drakua stated that he has no grudge against anyone and has forgiven all those people and agents who have directed their energy towards him instead of them focusing on what they can do for the People of Maracha Constituency.
He described that as politics of propaganda and malicious damage contrary to what the electoral laws and guidelines say. “I forgive each and everyone involved in spreading malicious propaganda against my name because of politics! Whoever wins or loses, shall still remain Maracha”, Mr Obeta stressed as he appealed for a peaceful campaign ahead of the 15th January 2026 general elections.
The Parliamentary Elections Act 2005, section 21, subsection 3 (a) and (b) prohibits people in Campaign rallies from using defamatory or insulting or usage of languages that constitute Incitement to public disorder or violence or threatens war.
Subsection 4; (a) of this act states that, any person who contravenes subsection 3 (a) commits an offence and is liable, upon conviction, to a fine not exceeding 120 currency points (equivalent of 2,400,000 Shs) or imprisonment not exceeding 5 years, or both.
(b) Any person who contravenes subsection 3 (b) commits an offence and is liable, upon Conviction, to a fine not exceeding 24 currency points (equivalent of 480,000 Shs) or Imprisonment not exceeding one year, or both.
Despite all these, both Maracha District Security Committee and Maracha District NRM Party officials have not come out to condemn or warn Maracha Constituency NRM flag Bearer and his team for the extreme level of blackmail and abuses reigned against Obeta Moses Drakua, NRM-leaning Independent candidate for the MP election.
In Maracha Constituency Member of Parliament race, a total of 5 Candidates were nominated ahead of 15 -1-2026 general election and these include Musician turned politician Agadribo Emmanuel aka Monopoly (NUP Party) candidate, Eng. Aguta Sam (Independent) candidate, Businessman / Farmer Obeta Moses Drakua (Independent) Incumbent Hon. Oguzu Lee Denis (FDC Party) candidate and Mr. Uhuru Nelson (NRM Party) candidate.
