Lightning strike kills pupil, injures five in Buliisa
The deceased has been identified as Desmon Rwothmiyo, a 6-year-old pupil.
Buliisa: Shock and grief have engulfed residents of Buliisa District after lightning struck a group of pupils at St. Agustin Nursery and Primary School in Sonsio Village, Bugoigo Parish, Butiaba Sub County, killing one child on the spot and leaving five others hospitalized.
The deceased has been identified as Desmon Rwothmiyo, a 6-year-old pupil.
Those injured have been named as Atuhura Salama (P.5), Giramia Coslate (P.4), Priscilla Ayomirwoth (P.1), Acel Maber Tasha (Top Class), and Giramia Gift (P.4), all learners at the same school.
The tragic incident reportedly occurred Wednesday morning around 10:30 a.m., during a light drizzle, as pupils played outside during break time.
Nickson Cwinyai Charles, the head teacher of St. Agustin Nursery and Primary School told our reporter on Thursday said he was away from the premises at the time but rushed to the scene upon receiving the news from staff members.
He added that the incident was immediately reported to the police, and the injured pupils were rushed to Buliisa General Hospital and Biiso Health Centre IV for treatment.
The LC1 Chairperson of Nyamukuta Village, Moses Adubango Chombe, expressed deep condolences to the family of the deceased and called for urgent measures to safeguard schools from similar disasters.
Efforts to reach the police and health officials for further details were unsuccessful by press time, as they could not be reached for comment.
