Sironko parents petition Umukuka III over declining interest in education

He further emphasized the cultural institution’s stance on the value of education.

Sironko:  Parents in Sironko District have petitioned His Highness the Umukuka III, the cultural leader of the Bamasaba, expressing deep concern over the growing disinterest in education among both parents and students in the region.

The concerns were raised on Monday during a prayer session for Senior Four candidates at Sironko Standards Senior Secondary School.

Parents voiced frustration over the lack of value placed on education by the local community, especially when compared to neighboring districts.

One parent remarked, “Most of the medical clinics operating in Sironko are owned by people from Kapchorwa. Our own children are not in school, and many parents here are not bothered.”

The school’s headteacher, Mr. Masaba Moses Musa, echoed similar sentiments, noting that a majority of learners at the school are from Bududa and Kapchorwa, while residents within Sironko Town Council show minimal commitment to educating their children.

Representing His Highness the Umukuka III at the event was Hon. Steven Masiga, the spokesperson of the Bugisu Cultural Institution. He assured parents that their concerns would be presented directly to the Umukuka for action and further dialogue.

Hon. Masiga also used the occasion to encourage the candidates to focus on their education and avoid destructive behaviors such as drug use.

“O-Level and A-Level certificates are no longer enough in today’s world. With an O-Level certificate, you may only qualify for work as a security guard or cleaner. Please aim to complete your education up to university level,” Masiga advised the students.

He further emphasized the cultural institution’s stance on the value of education. “As a cultural institution, we are deeply disturbed when a community loses interest in educating its children. If even the educated are struggling to find opportunities, what future awaits the uneducated?” he asked.

Masiga reminded parents that education is the greatest gift they can give to their children and pledged that the Bugisu Cultural Institution would continue advocating for educational development. He also noted that the institution has scholarship opportunities available for those in need.
