Masindi residents challenged to report domestic violence cases

“We will continue offering guidance and counselling to help reduce and eventually eliminate domestic violence, even as the project comes to an end,” she said.

Masindi: Residents of Masindi district have been urged to report cases of domestic violence and sexual gender-based violence (SGBV) to appropriate authorities such as the Police Family and Child Protection Unit and the office of the Probation Officer.

The call was made by Annette Karamagi, the Masindi District Probation and Child Welfare Officer, during a civic education session on SGBV held at Maiha Trading Centre in Bwijanga Sub-county.

The event was organized by the Forum for Women in Democracy (FOWODE) as part of the Advancing Women Engagement; Strengthening Opportunities to Mobilize for Equality (AWESOME) project.

Karamagi emphasized that although the AWESOME project is coming to an end this year, efforts to sensitize the community on the dangers and negative impacts of SGBV will continue.

“We urge all community members to report any form of sexual or gender-based violence to the police, my office, or other relevant authorities so that this vice can be eliminated,” she said.

Karamagi also noted a decline in domestic violence cases since the implementation of the 5-year AWESOME project. In the past two months, her office registered 19 cases of SGBV, a significant reduction compared to previous months.

Vanitah Katusiime, the Bwijanga Sub-county Community Facilitator at FOWODE, reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to collaborate with district officials to eliminate SGBV even after the project ends.

Moses Kyaligonza, the GISO for Bwijanga, said he works closely with local security forces to apprehend perpetrators of SGBV, noting that such cases have also declined in his area of jurisdiction.

“I always collaborate with security to apprehend culprits of SGBV, and now we have fewer cases in our area,” he said.

Rogers Boneyweki, a resident of Maiha, attributed the reduction in violence to the AWESOME project. “At least now we have fewer cases of SGBV. Many women have learned how to live harmoniously with their husbands, and others have acquired business skills for survival,” he explained.

Another resident, Brenda Akugizibwe, highlighted the peace that now exists in many families, thanks to the project’s interventions.

“We will continue offering guidance and counselling to help reduce and eventually eliminate domestic violence, even as the project comes to an end,” she said.
