SAD! Student hangs self dead in Kabarole

He reportedly untied a rope from a cow and carried it with him.

Kabarole: The territorial police in Rwenzori West region are investigating a case of suicide by hanging involving a 17-year-old student of St. Leo’s College Kyegobe.

According to Vincent Twesige, the Rwenzori West police spokesperson, the deceased has been identified as Ahurra Douglas, a Senior Three student and resident of Kyakarama cell, Kasiisi ward, Kiiko Town Council in Kabarole District.

Preliminary findings indicate that on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, at around 3:00 pm, Ahurra went to church for prayers and later returned home at about 6:00 pm. Upon arrival, he informed his mother that he was going to collect firewood from the valley. He reportedly untied a rope from a cow and carried it with him.

About 30 minutes later, a resident, Kyomuhendo Paul, discovered the teenager hanging from a eucalyptus tree in the garden of one John Baptist Wamala. Kyomuhendo rushed to inform Ahurra’s mother, Baguma Teopista, 63, who immediately reported the matter to Kiiko Police Station.

Police swiftly responded, with a team from East Division led by the Division Police Commander, the homicide unit, and the Scene of Crime Officer documenting the scene. Statements were recorded from the mother and other witnesses.

The body was later conveyed to Buhinga Regional Referral Hospital for postmortem examination as investigations continue.

Twesige described the incident as “a very sad occurrence” and urged parents, guardians, and communities to encourage young people to share their challenges and seek help whenever they are stressed or depressed.

“It is heartbreaking to lose such a young life. We call upon families, friends, and schools to build support systems that help our children overcome stress and avoid such tragedies,” Twesige said. Police inquiries into the matter are ongoing.
